RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Sunny April day

Three students, two alumni, two parents, one staff person

Gloves, boots, trash bags, donuts

Forms filled in with pledges from friends and family

Dollar bills and checks

Drive about a mile from the school

Tramp in the brush and by the river, picking up other people’s trash

Broken glass, cans, paper, plastic

Excitement when we find something unusual:

A rusty wheel, a large piece of metal, a different glass bottle

Conversation, songs, reflection, stories.

Result:

Over $1,000 to help children attend Fairhaven School

Tired muscles, elevated spirits, 30 bags of trash

A sense of connection with each other and our planet

A Fairhaven parent,

April 2009

I find it interesting that we (perhaps it’s only I) often use the cooking analogy with education, particularly a Sudbury education. As we rapidly approach graduation, I know I’ve heard people discuss whether or not a student is “fully cooked”, what steps and preparation he or she has taken, and what ingredients went into it.
Thank you for this “recipe”. I wonder what we’ll cook up next.
